Repurpose, Shoot, or Use AI? How to Decide What Your Next Ad Needs
The right answer depends on what your existing content can already prove, and what creative gap remains. AI is one tool among three, not an upgrade.
A decision process
Work through these for each concept, not for the library as a whole. Different concepts often reach different answers.
- Name the conceptWrite the idea and the one thing the viewer must believe.
- Check the proofDoes existing material show that, plainly? Use the Library-to-Ad Map.
- Run the rights and claims gatePaid-use permission, licences, and supported claims.
- Name the gapIf the proof exists, the gap is editing. If not, say what is absent.
- Pick the appropriate fixEdit when proof already exists; shoot when real proof is missing; consider a defined AI addition only for a truthful production gap.
- Record the decisionWrite the reason so the team can revisit it.
Step two depends on a source review. The Library-to-Ad Map provides the fields.
Repurpose
Choose this when
- The footage already contains the proof point on screen
- The product is clearly demonstrated, not just present
- A real reaction or testimonial supports the concept
- The problem is extraction, restructuring, or variation
Do not repurpose when the best moment is unusable, unlicensed, or cannot support the claim.
See content repurposing and UGC ads for how Unmade works with existing material.
Shoot
Choose this when
- The footage cannot credibly carry the idea
- A specific demonstration is missing
- The concept needs a particular creator perspective
- Required proof does not exist in any asset
Do not shoot just because the library feels old. Check whether the answer is already in it.
Use AI, narrowly
Choose this when
- A clearly defined production gap exists
- Added visual context would help a real idea
- Motion or animation can clarify something already true
- A voiceover or treatment supports an existing concept
Do not use AI to invent product behaviour, results, people, or endorsements.
AI is not treated as automatically better, and we do not claim it improves performance. Where it is used, scope it. Our AI ad creative page describes the supporting role it plays.
Truthful product proof
- Show the product as it is. Do not alter appearance, size, or behaviour
- No fabricated testimonials, synthetic customers, or cloned voices presented as endorsements
- A quote must be a real person's words with their permission for paid use
- Any AI-generated or AI-altered element is documented, and disclosed where required by a platform or law
- Claims need support independent of the creative
This is practical guidance, not legal advice. Check platform policies and applicable rules for your category.
Mixed approaches
A single plan can combine all three. A real customer clip is repurposed, a short insert shows a missing close-up, and a narrow AI treatment adds motion to a still. Record each addition separately so you can see what each contributed.
Some concepts should be held. If the proof is unavailable or the rights unclear, the honest answer is to wait.
Caveats
- No approach guarantees better ad performance. Evaluate results through client-run testing; this guide does not predict outcomes
- Your media team owns launch, testing, spend, and attribution
- Cost and timing depend on the project. We do not publish fixed figures here
- Different concepts need different approaches. Do not decide for the whole library at once
